Zawadi means Gift and this little one is our third baby named Zawadi. Her mother has advanced breast cancer and cannot feed the baby. They were trying to feed the baby raw cow’s milk and finally realized she was not thriving. She comes from Maasai land and her father brought her in to Neema. Most babies in Africa who lose their mothers do not survive due to lack of clean water, electricity, medical care and expensive formula. Neema is always glad to step in until the family can make other arrangements or until the baby is stable and out of danger, usually 2 to 3 years. It is expensive to keep a baby at Neema Hose Arusha and costs around $300 per month. You can sponsor a baby for as little as $30 per month.

Orphans are easier to ignore before you know their names. They are easier to ignore before you see their faces. It is easier to pretend they’re not real before you hold them in your arms. But once you do, everything changes.
