Beulah (Bella) Misana Lenard

On December 18, Neema House received a call that a new mother had just died and sweet baby Beulah, who was just seven days old, came to join the Neema House family. The maternal death rate for women in Africa is one in 39! In America it is one in 4,700. Even when the father is present, the death of the mother is almost a sure death sentence for these babies who now have to be put on the bottle. Fathers who cannot afford expensive formula are not trained in child care or sterilization procedures. Imagine trying to boil enough water daily for bottles without electricity, when you have to haul wood for the fire often from long distances.

Orphans are easier to ignore before you know their names. They are easier to ignore before you see their faces. It is easier to pretend they’re not real before you hold them in your arms. But once you do, everything changes.
