“Sometimes stability is its own kind of miracle” _ Modesta’s Success Story

Some of our MAP stories do not arrive loudly. They unfold slowly, in the quiet rhythm of everyday survival.

Modesta’s story is one of those….,

After giving birth to a child with a disability, Modesta experienced one of the most painful moments of her life when the father of her children abandoned her while she was three months pregnant with twins. Men often abandon the family believing they are cursed when a child has a disability.  The emotional stress deeply affected Modest’s health, leading to premature birth of the twins. Sadly, one of the twins did not survive.

There was a time when life felt like it was closing in on her. Loss came. Abandonment came. And with it came the heavy silence of not knowing how the next day would be survived. Yet even in that season, she did what mothers do—SHE KEPT GOING…

But eventually, she reached a point where she had no clear direction and no strength left to continue alone. It was then that she was advised to seek help.

With uncertainty in her heart and a small hope in her spirit, Modesta came and gently knocked on the doors of Neema Village. She did not know what to expect—only that she needed help.

She was welcomed with kindness, not judgment; with compassion, not rejection.

Through the MAP Program, Modesta was received, supported, and embraced with love—marking the beginning of a new chapter in her life.

In 2023, she joined the MAP Program at Neema Village, where she received startup capital to begin a small shop business. What started as a simple opportunity has now grown into a thriving and diversified livelihood.

Today, Modesta runs a shop that sells household essentials, cold drinks such as water, juice, and soda, and prepares and sells snacks including maandazi, sambusa, vitumbua, and bagia. She also provides mobile money services (M-Pesa) and sells cooking gas within her community.

Each day, she wakes up not with certainty, but with responsibility. A mother of two, she carries a past marked by deep pain, yet she has found strength to rebuild her life step bystep.

Through her business journey, something inside her also began to change. She learned……How to plan, how to manage, and how to believe in growth again. The training she received gave her tools, but confidence gave her direction.

Today, her life is no longer defined by uncertainty. It follows a rhythm—opening her shop in the morning, serving her community, and returning home with the quiet dignity of meaningful work that helps her make regular savings for her future.

Her children now live in a different reality—one where basic needs are met, rent is no longer a constant fear, and tomorrow feels stable rather than uncertain.

Modesta does not describe her life as perfect. She describes it as stable—and sometimes, stability is its own kind of miracle.

She is still becoming, still growing, still building. But now she does so from a place of strength she once thought she had lost forever.

Within her community, Modesta has become known as a hardworking and reliable small business owner. Her dedication and welcoming spirit have earned her trust and respect from many around her.

Today, her story is no longer centred on abandonment, pain, or loss. It is a story of restoration, empowerment, and hope. She has moved from survival to stability, from uncertainty to confidence, and from struggle to purpose.

Her dream is to expand her business further and have two stores because one store is no longer enough to keep all the items inside, she also dreams to secure a better future for herchildren, and inspire other mothers who may feel hopeless due to life’s challenges.

We are proud of Modesta and the progress she has made. Her journey reminds us that when vulnerable mothers are empowered with opportunity, support, and encouragement, they can rebuild their lives and create lasting change for their families and communities.

Your support makes stories like Modesta’s possible. Through the MAP Program, mothers are given opportunities to build sustainable livelihoods, restore dignity in their homes, and create brighter futures for themselves and their children.

Every act of support becomes part of a larger story of hope, restoration, and transformation for another mother waiting for a new beginning.
